No, you can’t go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks.
-Istanbul, We Might Be Giants
Constantinople might have been renamed to Istanbul by Ataturk in the 1920’s, but the remains of the old Byzantine city are still scattered about. Here’s some of the places my characters are scheming, dying, and carrying on affairs. (And who said history was boring?)
What exotic locales do your stories go to?
All images from Wikimedia Commons.
Most interesting facts, a good C word.
Now I'm hearing the Tiny Toons sing in my head. *sigh*
Great pics. I'd love to be able to see some place with so much history to it.
I've got the song running through my head now too, lol.
And you'll never hear me saying history is boring. I love this stuff.
Another place I long to visit. Sigh. Guess I'll just have to wait to read your book set there. ;-D
Beautiful images! Now I want to go..lol!
Istanbul is so beautiful! I went several years ago. Is the Aya Sofia still full of scaffolding? It was when I was there. It spoiled the effect although it was still impressive.
My stories tend to go to the exotic locale of ancient Egypt, where I've also been. (Well, I've been to modern Egypt. Close enough!)
I write about Istanbul and other places in Turkey…it's been Istanbul since 1453. They say it comes from the Greek "eis ten polin," or "in the city", although the name wasn't official until the 1930s. Ataturk can't take credit for everything 😉 Thanks for posting about my favorite city!
What a great setting! I'm sure your passions for place and history make everything come alive in your manuscripts!
Istanbul is a wonderful place. I highly recommend it.
Wow. Amazing images, Stephanie. To me, history is the farthest thing from boring. My locales aren't really exotic, but London is pretty cool though, and some of the back story in my WIP happens there. Looking forward to seeing your book in print one day soon. Sounds awesome!
Sadly, my stories don't go to exotic locales… yet. They only go to L.A., Boston, Detroit, an intergalactic space station, those sort of places. Besides, forget my stories; I should go to Istanbul.
And hey, did you know that "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" was not originally done by TMBG? I just found out last month. Seems they were something like the 10th band to cover the hit song by the Four Lads.
