It’s a dreary, blustery day in Alaska. I’m worried summer might pass us by this year.
So what did I do today for the sheer pleasure of brightening my day? I made tiramisu from scratch. I haven’t had any yet- it’s still chilling in the fridge, but I tasted the frosting and it’s pretty much nirvana.
I’ll admit though- I was intimidated by this recipe. It was 2 full pages in my Williams-Sonoma book and uses 10 eggs. I love to bake, but I’ve put off tiramisu for a long time now because I wasn’t sure it would turn out.
What the heck? That’s no way to live! We can really only live if we manage to face our fears. I have a number of writing-related fears I’m facing up to as well. So I have a challenge for you today.
Try something new.
I don’t care what it is. Change a tire by yourself, bake a cake, or do something scary in your writer-life. You never know, you just might surprise yourself.
What will you do today?
I have a recipe for peppermint tiramisu that's a heck of a lot shorter. I'd be intimidated by that 2 page recipe, too! Props for making it from scratch.
What am I gonna do? Um, I think just open up the WiP and write. That'll be a huge step for me after the last week.
Now I'm salivating.
Stephanie- Ohlala! Peppermint tiramisu sounds yummy! I make peppermint brownies that are uber-tasty too. Good luck with the WIP!
That looks fabulous! Giving me the munchies, but it's too late to munch. (sigh)
Oh, I love tiramisu. I wish I could invite myself over for a taste. 🙂 Good for you, to make it.
It's late now but maybe I'll think of something new tomorrow. Great prompt!
OG I'm sooo hungry!
Mmmmmm… Now you're making me hungry!
What will I do that's new? hmm. I will have to think about it!
Vicki- Oh, it's never too late to munch! Although my metabolism might tell me otherwise.
Tricia- I'd send you some, but I don't think it's going to last very long. Cake of any kind is a hot commodity in my house!
Nicole- Me too! I told myself I have to write something before I'm allowed to munch.
Amalia- You could always learn some words in another language. Or try Icelandic out on someone!
That's part of the reason why I love to try new things: I can learn something new about myself and maybe become stronger as a result. That, and it's fun!
That tiramisu does look delectable!
Amanda- It's pretty amazing when you discover you're actually good at something you've never done before. I'm about to attempt watercolors on canvas. I hope I surprise myself!
Mmmm Tiramisu! I went to Italy recently, and had it there. Any you know what they added? Lemon! Weird, right? But just a teensy bit of lemon, and it actually tasted incredible. 🙂
Anywho, I don't know what I'll try that's new… I'll just take anything as it comes! 😀
Urrmmm… tiramisu…
One of my last projects as a recipe developer was to develop a tiramisu mix for an international food company. Trust me, tasting and retasting 17 different tiramisu recipes in a week will ruin you on the stuff for years.
But I have to say, you now have me thinking of it again! I may have to just give it another try.
wow, I've never tried to make such a complicated dessert. Hope it comes out yummy! Today I'm working on my WIP as always!
The tiramisu looks yummy and I know the one you made will be just as delicious. After this I think I'm going in search of a tiramisu recipe and see what I can do (since I'm starving now). 🙂

Thoughts in Progress
I like to think of trying something new & possibly difficult (like making tiramisu from scratch!! Go you!!) as opening new pathways in my brain. I resist but it's good for me!
Loved the dessert. Sorry, Stephenie, I didn't leave you any. But that's okay. You can make some more, right?
Congrats on 200 Followers — very impressive, SD. Keep on cooking.
I'll tell you what I'm going to do today. I'm going to fly/hitchhike/boat/swim to Alaska and come steal me some tiramisu.
Okay, not really. But that picture above looks really really good, and I don't even like tiramisu!
Congrats on 200 followers!
Yummy! I would be intimidated by a two-page recipe, too, but it will be sooooo worth it if it turns out!
Great post, Stephanie! 🙂
I run far, far away from cooking challenges. I'm blessed to have a chef-quality cook in my hubby.
My challenge is to write a brand-new query letter. I did a round of unsuccessful querying last year and now have a shiny new manuscript to try to find representation for. I hope to be surprised in finding it all easier this time! (We'll see).
Ten eggs?
TEN?
I'm already frightened of that recipe. Kudos to you for making it. I'm so impressed!
Oh yummm… tiramisu. I've never made it from scratch before. I've tried a fake "no bake" recipe that was….. er… interesting. 🙂
Stephanie:
Yummo! Looks terrific.
I've been doing research for a book that I want to set in Alaska. Small world!
I'm not a cook, but once in a blue moon I open a cook book and make something.
My challenge is to start a new wip today.
Yum, tiramisu! Cocoa, espresso and cream, what's not to love?
Excellent advice, Stephanie. Life is all about embracing change, trying new things and having no regrets. I'm not always successful, but I keep trying. 🙂 Today I will work on a short story idea. For some reason, shorts intimidate me in a way long fiction does not.
Mmm. Perhaps I will bake today. It's been a while.
Oh, that looks DELICIOUS. I tried making Thai Curried Spinach soup this week… and it worked! That was definitely something new and scary, since I almost never cook.
Not sure what I can do today that's different as I'm out all day, but I like challenging myself. I think trying new things, even if they're a bit scary, is a great way to keep yourself young. Growing stagnant and complacent is one of my worst fears.
The tiramisu looks mouth watering good.
I did do something new yesterday though. I went out to eat at this local family owned restaurant that my boyfriend and I eat at weekly. I tried a new dish! It was the Seafood primavera and it was delish!
I also wrote a new beginning for my novel.
I mean if these things aren't branching out then I don't know what is =).

Stephanie,
One of my blogging buddies, D.L., is trying to gather followers from all fifty states and every country. He has 38 states so far, but he is missing Alaska. Could you pop over and follow him? Let him know you are from Alaska – and tell him who sent you! You'll love his blog.

On a different note, http://dlcrueisingaltitude.blogspot.com/2010/05/blogging-buddies-around-globe.html is looking for hits from all 50 states, and is missing Alaska. Would you take a look at decide if you want to follow him or not?
I open a cook book and make something.

Hi Stephanie! I just came across your blog from Caroline Richmond's and it's wonderful. I especially love this post because this is something I am always trying to remind myself (and my children) to do. Trying something new is empowering and whether or not you fail, almost always worth it.
