I felt like poisoning a monk.
-Umberto Eco on why he wrote the novel The Name of the Rose
I wrote Hatshepsut because the poor woman was going to drive me insane if I didn’t get her voice out of my head (and because I’ve always wanted to time travel to Ancient Egypt). I wrote my newest book because I felt like a prostitute turned Empress was about as fun a story as they come. (I was right!)
Why did you write your story?
Like you, I needed to get the characters out of my head. I love Ancient Egypt, too, and I fell in love with the character. When I wrote the first book, the second started screaming at me.
I woke up one morning with these two characters standing in front of me. There was all this tension between them and I had to find out why. A year and a half later I had it all figured out. 🙂
I love The Name of the Rose. And that is one funny explanation for writing it. I can't match that.
I wrote my current project b/c I had a dream, then the butterflies in my belly wouldn't stop. The butterflies told me to do it.
Because my husband and my kids loved it so much and wouldn't let it go. 🙂
Nice inspiration! You're probably channeling past-life memories or something 😉 Prob the reason I write my books is the same…they're in my head and I got to get them out…also it's soothing to write:)
Ha! Love it!
I wrote my book because my MC wouldn't leave me alone either. She was determined to have her story written, and so I obliged! 😉
I wrote my first novel because I read St. Patrick's Confession, in which he speaks about leading a beautiful Irish princess to faith in Jesus.
I wrote my second story based on the plot of Patrick's first letter, Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, in which he condemns Coroticus for abducting his new converts and "giving them away like prizes".
I love that quote!
I wrote my first YA, set in Rwanda, because after 10 years I really needed to process my feelings about what I experienced, and I wanted to share it with others. It was actually the 4th book I wrote, because it felt like such a huge task. I didn't want it to be a memoir and I didn't want to be didactic or pedantic. I wanted to tell a story.
Because . . . using imaginary people as guenia pigs is less illegal than using real ones.
Also, I have an award for you on my blog!
Umberto Eco has the best quotes.
And I love his reason.
And you're right, prostitute turned Empress is pretty epic.
My story started differently though. It started with a song that inspired a scene. It was clear that that scene was the end of a story, and I thought, "How the heck did we get here?"
Et voila. 😀
I chuckled when I read that quote. I just watched that movie.
I started writing my current WIP because the idea just came to me, although it had been building for quite some time. All of a sudden I realized that this vague idea floating around in my brain would make a great novel.
