I don’t love running. In fact, abhor is not strong enough a word to describe my feelings toward an activity only Satan could have spawned.
But I do it because I’m turning 30 next year and my metabolism is dying a slow and painful death. Here’s my internal monologue as I run, on the treadmill because there’s six inches of snow and it’s five below outside.
0:01-0:05= “This really sucks. At least I get to read while I warm up.”
0:05-0:10= “I hate this. Why on God’s green earth am I torturing myself?”
0:10-0:15= “This is just sadistic.”
0:15-0:20= “I LOVE endorphins! Yeah! I’m a freaking rock star!”
0:20-0:25= “Holy cow! Who knew I could run faster than six miles per hour? YAHOO!”
0:25-0:26= “I want to die. Who knew I could sweat this much?”
0:26-0:30= “Wow. I am totally amazing. Look what I can do!”
Okay, so here’s my internal monologue when I sit down to write.
0:01-0:05= “This really sucks. At least I get to read my blogs while I pretend to write.”
0:05-0:10= “I hate this. Why on God’s green earth am I torturing myself thinking I can write?”
0:10-0:15= “This is just sadistic.”
0:15-0:20= “I LOVE writing! Yeah! I’m a freaking rockstar!”
0:20-0:25= “Holy cow! Who knew I could write something this good? YAHOO!”
0:25-0:26= “I want to die. Who knew I could write something this bad?”
0:26-0:30= “Wow. I am totally amazing. Look what I can do!”
Yeah. Writing is like running. Now I need to go take a shower.
hahaha.
I gotta admit that I don't feel that way at all– but it's very entertaining when you put it that way 🙂
This is funny stuff! I feel the same about running & writing, except that I tend to write much more than I run. Go figure!
PS: Thanks for visiting my blog. Stop by for a chocolate chip waffle anytime…they are calorie free!
Exactly. I like the endorphin spike. I'm an endorphin junkie, but getting to that point… blech.
You are so right! I'm going to run now. Well. . . . .maybe later
Great analogy!!
This is SOOO true. At this very moment, I'm talking myself into getting on the treadmill to run. My excuse is, I'd rather be writing. Then after I've run and sweated myself half to death, I'll sit down to write and say, Hmm, let's get up and do something. Yeah…
Hehe, I turned 32 this year, and the metabolism… well, I've forgotten what that is.
HAHA! This is so, so true! I also have a love/hate relationship with running and writing. They're both things that you just have to do, I suppose – things you need to invest time and energy in before you get anything out. All I gotta say is, yay for endorphins!
I can't run. Literally– blown knee.
Which is a shame, because I think at times I would like it.
However, I can totally relate to writing. Though my cycle tends to be a bit more drawn out, I still go through pretty much the same round of thoughts 🙂
I'm a runner and writer. Writing a novel is like running a marathon full of twists and turns and tired spots and inspired spots.
Ha! Great analogy.
L.T.- My writing cycle is usually longer too, but last night I only wrote for half an hour. Maybe less actually. I had to hurry to watch Star Trek with the hubby!
Paul- I have the utmost admiration for marathon runners. My husband did the L.A. marathon a few years back and I was impressed. There's just no way I'm going to run a marathon!
Julie- At least I don't dread sitting down to write. There are definitely times I dread running.
Cort- That sounds about like me yesterday!
Terresa- I write every day, but only run three times a week. I do yoga and pilates the other days.
Wendy- I'm with you! Getting to the endorphins is painful. Music helps though.
When I run, my mind shuts off b/c I need to concentrate on breathing… though I hate running (hence why I play basketball), I actually see this as a benefit — it's nice not to think.
But, all that being said, I'd rather run for an hour than do an hour of yoga (FU half moon!)
Bane- Nooooooooooooo! Yoga is the best! My brain does one of two things when I run- focuses on the torture at hand or starts to wander to my story I'm writing. That can be a good thing.
Yeah — girls like yoga b/c they're flexible… it'd probably help if I weren't doing crazy yoga (P90X — damn you, Tony Horton, and your plastic smiling face)
Oh! I've heard of that P90X- my husband and all his friends have tried it. I haven't yet- I'm a little worried I won't be able to hack the whole thing. I've been doing yoga for 11 years so if I can't handle it I'll be mega-ticked!
Wow. I feel totally odd man out. I love writing. Even when I'm procrastinating because I don't want to finish the book, I still don't feel at all like it's torture at any point in the process…
LOL
lol, you are SO right on with this.
